Owning a home was Shadesh Watkins’ “biggest lifetime project.” She enrolled in the Tucson Urban League’s Affordable Housing program and took the required home ownership classes, but she didn’t qualify for assistance because of her credit card debt. “I didn’t let that stop me,” she says. “You just have to hang on in there. It takes time.”
Five years later, Shadesh established herself financially and qualified for one of the many homes that the Tucson Urban League builds every year.“I moved into my house a month before I turned 35. It was a big thing, like graduating from high school.”
Living with her three sons, Jaqwan, 14, Jamerice, 11, and Jahlil, 7, Shadesh works two jobs and plans someday to earn a college degree. “I tell my sons, ‘I may not win the lottery, I may not be rich, but I am a homeowner. This house is for your future.’ I want them to be able to say, ‘My mom worked hard for this.’”
The Tucson Urban League Affordable Housing Program provides the basic Homebuyer Education training, Pre-purchase Homeownership counseling, Post-purchase counseling, Mortgage Delinquency and Default counseling, Home Equity Conversion Mortgage, Loss Mitigation Counseling, and Renter Assistance counseling to a broad spectrum of families throughout Pima County.
The Housing Development Department is engaged in affordable home construction. The staff works hard to increase the stock of decent, affordable housing as well as to bring the dream of homeownership within the reach of stable low and moderate-income families in Tucson. Traditionally, the department has focused on building homes for first-time homebuyers, but its project “pipeline” now consists of affordable rental projects, as well as, single family homes for first-time homebuyers. The mission of the department is to provide a diversity of ownership opportunities including single-family detached homes, townhomes, and duplexes, as well as, to increase the stock of affordable rental units in Tucson and Pima County.
Low-income-owner-occupied homes and families are assisted in reducing their utility bills by making repairs to their homes that lower energy consumption. These Emergency home repairs programs targets low-to-moderate-income families and elderly/disabled homeowners who need major and/or minor repairs to correct health and safety hazards and substandard living conditions are throughout the City of Tucson and Pima County.
