Owning a home was Shadesh Watkins’ “biggest lifetime project.” She enrolled in the Tucson Urban League’s Affordable Housing program and took the required home ownership classes, but she didn’t qualify for assistance because of her credit card debt. “I didn’t let that stop me,” she says. “You just have to hang on in there. It takes time.”
Five years later, Shadesh established herself financially and qualified for one of the many homes that the Tucson Urban League builds every year.“I moved into my house a month before I turned 35. It was a big thing, like graduating from high school.”
Living with her three sons, Jaqwan, 14, Jamerice, 11, and Jahlil, 7, Shadesh works two jobs and plans someday to earn a college degree. “I tell my sons, ‘I may not win the lottery, I may not be rich, but I am a homeowner. This house is for your future.’ I want them to be able to say, ‘My mom worked hard for this.’”

The Tucson Urban League views housing and homeownership as an integral part of helping individuals achieve economic self-sufficiency. Homeownership is not only a means to providing safe and decent shelter for families, it is also a means of building wealth. To this end, the Housing Development Department has worked hard to increase the stock of decent, affordable housing as well as to bring the dream of homeownership within reach of stable low and moderate-income families in Tucson. Further, the qualified staff works to ensure that the homes it builds are a source of pride for residents and assets to their communities. Innovative, ambitious, and entrepreneurial the Housing Development Department combines the compassion of a nonprofit organization with the technical skills of a for-profit developer. The result is that the Tucson Urban League is making the American Dream a Tucson reality.
The Tucson Urban League Housing Development Department received commitments of over $500,000 for homeownership projects in the next two years. These funds will be leveraged to produce 40 to 50 homes for first-time homebuyers during that two year period. Additionally, along with co-applicant, the Metropolitan Housing Corporation, the Tucson Urban League received a $6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to build 68 units of subsidized senior housing at 36th and Kino Parkway, adjacent to the Quincie Douglas Center.
