Owning a home was Shadesh Watkins’ “biggest lifetime project.” She enrolled in the Tucson Urban League’s Affordable Housing program and took the required home ownership classes, but she didn’t qualify for assistance because of her credit card debt. “I didn’t let that stop me,” she says. “You just have to hang on in there. It takes time.”

Five years later, Shadesh established herself financially and qualified for a home. “I moved into my house a month before I turned 35. It was a big thing, like graduating from high school.”
Living with her three sons, Jaqwan, 14, Jamerice, 11, and Jahlil, 7, Shadesh works two jobs and plans someday to earn a college degree. “I tell my sons, ‘I may not win the lottery, I may not be rich, but I am a homeowner. This house is for your future.’ I want them to be able to say, ‘My mom worked hard for this.’”
